Worlds 2019 Play-in Groups Day 3 round up

We are now three days in to the Worlds 2019 Play-in Groups and today we saw the locking of first and second seed in group A and B. Just like the last two days this post contains spoilers so if you don’t want to know today results don’t continue reading.

Today was something thats for sure. We had an hour long game between ISG and DFM which was so terrible even the casters, referee’s, other team and personalities all tweeting and talking smack about it.

StarSeries i-League Season 8 ended on 27 October with Evil Genius beating Fnatic on the final to take home the title and $250.000 in cash prize.

The StarSeries i-League Season 8 toke place in Turkey more specifically in Belek and had a Prize pool of $500.000.The event format was of double-elimination groups and playoffs with all matches being a BO3.

In the event were participating 8 of the best 10 teams in the world ranking, which meant we were in for a treat of high-level CS:GO, and that naming a favorite to win the tournament would be a difficult task with all the great teams in attendance, and the fact that teams like Evil Genius and Navi hadn’t performed to their level in recent tournaments.

Natus Vincere and Avangar were the biggest disappointments of the tournament.

The two biggest names of the CIS region did not have a great tournament, with both teams underperforming, and not going as far as it was expected.

Navi that is known for starting tournaments slowly did it once again, losing to G2 2-1 in their first B03 of the tournament, dropping to the lower bracket where they faced Heroic for their tournament live. They would surprisingly lose 2-0 to the Danish team and were eliminated from the tournament in a much earlier stage than most people expected.

Avangar also did not have a much better showing. The vice-champions of the last major started the tournament with a 2-0 win against Heroic moving forward in the upper bracket. They then faced G2 to whom they lost 0-2 dropping to the lower bracket, where they played against Brazilian side Furia losing 1-2 and being eliminated from the tournament. A lot of fans and analysts expected Avangar to have a good showing, to prove that the last major run wasn’t a fluke and that the team was indeed one of the top 10 teams in the world, however that did not happen.

We talked about Navi and Avangar underperforming and having early tournament exits than what was expected, but there were also teams that had a better tournament than a lot of people expected like Heroic that finished ahead of teams like:

  • Navi
  • Avangar
  • mousesports
  • North

However, the biggest surprise of the tournament was Furia. The Brazilian team finished 3rd in the tournament, something only the most hopeful fans of the team could think was possible before the tournament.

Furia eliminated the two French teams in G2 and Vitality, and the Australian side of Renegades in the playoffs, losing 2-1 to Fnatic in the consolidation final.

The Brazilian side only lost three series in all the tournament, one versus Ninja in Pijamas in their first B03 of the tournament, one against EG the winners of the tournament, and the third being against Fnatic in the consolidation final.
